The first error lies in the wording itself: the narrators said, “lā tuʿmal al-maṭī” (“mounts are not put to use”), whereas the correct expression is “lā tushaddu al-riḥāl” (“saddles are not fastened”).
The second error is that they treated the report as coming from the collection of Buṣrah ibn Abī Buṣrah, while in fact it is traced back to his father, Abū Buṣrah, as is clear from the first two chains. For this reason al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar in al-Taqrīb and al-Khazrajī in al-Khulāṣa say of this Buṣrah:
“A Companion who is the son of a Companion; the reliable version of the ḥadīth is that it belongs to his father, Abū Buṣrah.”
Fifth chain: ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar
Abū Zayd ʿUmar ibn Shabbah al-Numayrī recorded it in Akhbār al-Madīnah, saying: “Ibn Abī al-Wazīr narrated to us; Sufyān narrated to us from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from Ṭalq, from Qazʿah, who said: I came to Ibn ʿUmar and told him, ‘I wish to go to Mount Ṭūr.’ He replied, ‘Saddles are fastened only for three mosques…’—and he related the ḥadīth—‘so leave Mount Ṭūr aside and do not go there.’”
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal is said to have transmitted it in his Musnad, so it appears in al-Ṣārim al-Munkī (p. 241).
I say: it is not found in the Musnad, and I suspect that the remark “Aḥmad narrated it in his Musnad” slipped in here through the inadvertence of a copyist or typesetter. Its proper place is after the next report cited in al-Ṣārim—that of ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Bahrām: “ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd narrated to us, from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, who said: I heard Abū Saʿīd…,” the ḥadīth that appeared a little earlier. There he attributed it to ʿUmar ibn Shabbah (“Abū Zayd: Hishām ibn ʿAbd al-Malik narrated to us, ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd narrated…”) without ascribing it to the Musnad, even though it is indeed found there, as already noted—and it is unlikely that so obvious a point would have eluded al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn
