Al-Thamar al-MustatabNasir al-Din al-Albani

Fourth: It must not be erected over a grave, for doing so is forbidden. ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that, during the illness from which he never recovered, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “May Allah curse the Jews and the Christians; they turned the graves of their prophets into places of worship.” She added, “Had it not been for that, his grave would have been left openly visible, but he feared it would be taken as a mosque.” He ﷺ also said, “O Allah, do not allow my grave to become an idol. May Allah curse a people who turned the graves of their prophets into places of worship.”

The first narration is from ʿĀʾishah, and the second is from Abū Hurayrah.

… It is reported through the chain of Muhammad b. Hajar al-Hadrami: “Sa id b. Abd al-Jabbar b. Wa il narrated to us, from his father, from his mother, from Wa il….” This isnad contains three flaws: (1) weakness of some transmitters, (2) a break in the chain, and (3) textual abnormality. 1. The first flaw concerns Muhammad b. Hajar al-Hadrami. Al-Dhahabi states in al-Mizan: “He has reports that are rejected; al-Bukhari said: ‘There is some doubt about him.’” Ibn Hajar endorses this judgement in al-Lisan and cites Abu Ahmad al-Hakim: “He was not considered reliable.” I add: his teacher Sa id b. Abd al-Jabbar is likewise weak, as noted in Taqrib. 2. The second flaw is that Abd al-Jabbar b. Wa il is not known to have heard from his mother; it has even been said that he heard nothing from either parent (Tahdhib). 3. The third flaw lies in the text itself: Wa il’s hadith describing the Prophet’s prayer appears in Sahih Muslim, the Sunan and numerous other collections through many routes and with various wordings, yet none of them mention a mihrab except this weak report, which proves its irregular—and indeed dubious—character. For the parallel chains, see al-Bayhaqi, vol. 2, pp. 24, 25, 26, 28, 30, 57, 58, 72, 81, 98, 99, 111, 112, 131, 132, 178.
