Among those reports is one traced back to the Prophet and narrated by Anas:
“Build the mosques and keep them jumm (i.e., free of parapets or any elevated adornment).”
Al-Bayhaqī recorded it through the chain of Layth from Ayyūb from Anas. Layth—meaning Layth ibn Sulaym—is weak, and the chain is also broken, for Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr says in Zād al-Maʿād, “According to them, Ayyūb never heard anything from Anas.” From this it is clear that al-Suyūṭī’s grading of the ḥadith as ḥasan is unwarranted. His commentator al-Munāwī relayed the verdict of weakness from Ibn al-Qaṭṭān, Mughlaṭāy, and al-Dhahabī.
Al-Suyūṭī cited a supporting narration from Ibn ʿAbbās with the wording “(Recorded by Ibn Abī Shaybah),” likewise marking it ḥasan, and the commentator offered no objection. Allah knows best.
Another report is from Ibn ʿUmar, who said, “We were forbidden—or we were prohibited—to pray in a mosque that has been made elevated.” Al-Bayhaqī also recorded this through Layth from Mujāhid from Ibn ʿUmar. It is weak for the same reason—that Layth’s reliability is compromised.
Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid states: “Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Kabīr; its transmitters are those found in the Ṣaḥīḥ except for Layth ibn Abī Sulaym. He is trustworthy but prone to tadlīs, and he transmitted it with an ʿanʿanah.”
