Al-Tayālisī also reports this same chain in an abridged form, with the wording:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two rakʿahs on a rush mat.”
The third route: related by Thābit from Anas in a shortened version that omits the phrase “two rakʿahs.” Al-Ṭabarānī records it in al-Ṣaghīr.
(2) From Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī:
He entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and found him praying on a rush mat, prostrating on it.
Muslim, al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah, al-Bayhaqī, and Aḥmad transmit it through al-Aʿmash, from Abū Sufyān, from Jābir, from him. The wording “prostrating on it” is unique to Muslim and Aḥmad.
(3) From al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah with the wording:
“He used to pray on a rush mat and on a tanned hide.” (1)
(1) Reported by Abu Dawud, al-Hakim and al-Bayhaqi through the chain: Yunus ibn al-Harith → Abu Awn Muhammad ibn Ubayd Allah al-Thaqafi → his father → (al-Mughira). Al-Hakim judged it “sound according to the conditions of the two Shaykhs,” and al-Dhahabi limited this to “Muslim’s conditions.” Both assessments are incorrect, for neither Yunus ibn al-Harith nor Ubayd Allah al-Thaqafi belong to the narrators accepted by al-Bukhari or Muslim. In fact, the former is weak and the latter unknown; Ibn Hibban also indicates that his narration from al-Mughira is interrupted, as stated in al-Taqrib. Ahmad likewise recorded the hadith through this same route with the wording: “The Messenger of Allah used (or preferred) to pray on a tanned hide.”
وأخرجه الطيالسي من هذا الوجه مختصرا بلفظ:
صلى رسول الله ﷺ ركعتين على حصير
الثالث: عن ثابت عنه مختصرا دون قوله: ركعتين

وقوله: (يسجد عليه). تفرد به مسلم وأحمد
(٣) عن المغيرة بن شعبة بلفظ:
كان يصلي على الحصير والفروة المدبوغة (١)

وهو وهم فإن يونس بن الحارث وعبيد الله الثقفي ليسا من رجال الشيخين. ثم إن الأول منهما ضعيف والآخر مجهول أشار ابن حبان إلى أن حديثه عن المغيرة منقطع كما في (التقريب) والحديث أخرجه أحمد من هذا الوجه بلفظ: كان رسول الله ﷺ يصلي أو يستحب أن يصلي على فروة مدبوغة
