and waste of money (1)—it is, in fact, like a pillar in the way it breaks the rows, yet it is even more harmful, for it cuts through many rows in proportion to its length. Scholars must therefore make this clear and, in their lessons and admonitions, call for these pulpits to be removed and restored to the form of his pulpit, peace and blessings be upon him. Those who have authority over mosque affairs must put this into effect, freeing the worshippers from its harms.
One of its harms, which the pillars do not share, is that at times it renders the prayer unsound and invalid, as we have seen on numerous occasions; for it is quite common that the imam lapses in forgetfulness
(1) How apt is the passage cited by Shaykh Jamal al-Din al-Qasimi in his book Islah al-Masajid min al-Bidaʿ wa-l-ʿAwaʾid (Reforming Mosques from Innovations and Customs). He relates: “A discerning scholar once said: In those generations when competition was at its height to erect mosque walls and domes, to gild them, and to pour untold wealth into their furnishings and hangings—who among the people of insight dared say to those benefactors: ‘You are erecting monuments that ensnare the common folk in innovations; you are spending your fortunes to reduce religion to mere outward rites, just as every past nation replaced the beauty of creed with the beauty of temple walls and the light of faith with the lights of shrines. The rituals of religion have thus come to resemble wedding celebrations and banquet gatherings, so thoroughly are minds absorbed by carvings and decorations and so far do thoughts wander in contemplating recesses and marvels of the pulpits. Yet the purpose of these assemblies was to strip the intellect of worldly distractions, free it from the allure of clay-bound appearances, and bear the spirit on the wings of that collective devotion to the door of sacred mercy, that it might knock with the hand of self-stripping and pure servitude, then return to its realm carrying a light from the world of holiness—strengthening it in its struggle, keeping it firm upon the path, and shielding it from the trials and pitfalls of this life. When it has fulfilled its duty in this world, it ascends to its own sphere with the strength it has gained and enters the gardens of divine bounty in the state prepared for it.’” End of quotation.
