As for the extra passage set off by double brackets, it is Aḥmad’s version transmitted through Ibn Isḥāq, who said: “ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Kurayz al-Khuzāʿī related to me, from al-Ḥasan, with the wording: ‘Do not pray in a camel’s watering trough, for they were created from the jinn—do you not see…’ ” and he added: “Pray in sheepfolds, for they are nearer to mercy.”
Al-Majmaʿ states: “It was reported by Aḥmad and by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Kabīr. The transmitters in Aḥmad’s chain are reliable, and Ibn Isḥāq made the transmission explicit by saying, ‘He narrated to me (thanā).’ ”
I say: The chain is sound. Although no one besides Ibn Ḥibbān declared ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Ṭalḥah trustworthy, two reliable narrators—Ṣafwān ibn Sulaym and Ḥammād ibn Zayd—did transmit from him. In al-Taqrīb he is graded “acceptable (maqbūl).”
As for al-Shawkānī’s remark that “its chain is ṣaḥīḥ,” that is not correct.
Al-Bayhaqī also recorded it through al-Shāfiʿī, who said: “Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad informed us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṭalḥah,” with similar wording.
The report is further corroborated by a narration from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about praying in camel resting places, and he replied…”
