Hadith 2: It was recorded by Ibn Mājah, al-Ṭaḥāwī, al-Bayhaqī, and Aḥmad—as well as by al-Ṭayālisī and al-Ruyānī in his Musnad—through several chains from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī on his authority. (1) In al-Zawāʾid it is said: “Its chain is sound.” That judgment is correct, except that al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī was known for tadlīs. Yet the wording found in the Musnad suggests that he actually heard it from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mughaffal, for Aḥmad cites three hadiths with this very chain; the present report is the last of them, while the first begins, “Were it not that dogs are a community among communities, I would have ordered that they be killed….”
Aḥmad then narrated it elsewhere, from al-Ḥasan, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said… and included this tradition. In that version a man asked him, “Abū Saʿīd, from whom did you hear this?” He replied, “ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mughaffal related it to me”—and he swore an oath—“from the Prophet ﷺ so-and-so years ago; indeed, he told us these reports in that very gathering.”
This shows that al-Ḥasan heard additional hadiths from him in that same session, and it is most probable that the present narration was one of them. Allah knows best.
Al-Nasāʾī transmitted from it only the prohibition against praying in camel pens.
