“Sufyān related to us, from al-Aʿmash, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, that the Prophet ﷺ was asked, ‘Shall we pray in the camels’ pens (aʿtān)?’ He replied, ‘No.’ They asked, ‘Shall we pray in the sheepfolds (marābiḍ)?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ They asked, ‘Must we perform ablution after eating camel meat?’ He answered, ‘Yes.’ They asked, ‘Must we perform ablution after eating sheep meat?’ He said, ‘No.’
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad said, ‘ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh was a man of Rayy; he served as the judge of Rayy, and his grandmother was either a freedwoman or a slave-girl of ʿAlī.’ ʿAbd Allāh added, ‘My father said, “Ādam and Saʿīd ibn Masrūq also narrated it from him, and he was trustworthy.”’
I say: The rest of the transmitters are reliable—men cited by al-Bukhārī and Muslim—so the chain is likewise sound.
Al-Ṭaḥāwī also recorded it through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Idrīs, from al-Aʿmash, and that version contains an additional phrase which will be mentioned shortly.
Another supporting report comes from Sabrāh ibn Maʿd with wording similar to Abū Hurayrah’s narration, except that it uses the term marāḥ (grazing ground) in place of aʿtān (camel pens). Ibn Mājah, al-Dāraqutnī, al-Bayhaqī, and Aḥmad transmitted it through the chain of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Rabīʿ ibn Sabrāh ibn Maʿbad al-Juhanī—who said, “My father informed me from his father”—as a marfūʿ report.
This chain is ḥasan and meets Muslim’s criteria, although there is some discussion about this ʿAbd al-Malik; nevertheless, al-ʿAjlī declared him trustworthy.
There is also the narration of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mughaffal al-Muzanī, which is
