He said: “Muʿammar narrated to us, from Ayyūb, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, in a report traced back to the Prophet with these very words.”(1)
Al-Tirmidhī remarked, “This ḥadīth is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.”
And so it is, for every man in its chain is reliable and is counted among the narrators of the two Shaykhs. Yet there is some variation in the transmissions from Nāfiʿ: Muʿammar related it from Ayyūb in this form, and al-ʿUmrī likewise corroborated him, relaying from Nāfiʿ—on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted women permission to let their hems down one handspan… a report of similar purport, recorded by Aḥmad.
Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr also transmitted it from Nāfiʿ, from Umm Salamah, stating that she mentioned women’s hems to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ… the ḥadīth; al-Nasāʾī recorded it.
Al-Nasāʾī then cited another route: Ayyūb ibn Mūsā, from Nāfiʿ, from Ṣafiyyah, from Umm Salamah, that when the Prophet ﷺ spoke concerning the lower garment, Umm Salamah said… the ḥadīth.
It was further corroborated by Abū Bakr ibn Nāfiʿ, from his father, from Ṣafiyyah bint Abī ʿUbayd, who conveyed it to him; Mālik recorded it, and through his transmission Abū Dāwūd as well.
Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq likewise followed Nāfiʿ with this narration, and it was recorded by al-Dārimī, al-Bayhaqī, and Aḥmad.
