The chain of this ḥadith is judged sound (ḥasan). It is related by Usāmah ibn Zayd, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ clothed me with a thick Coptic garment that had been sent to him by Dihyah al-Kalbi, so I let my wife wear it. He asked, ‘Why did you not put on the Coptic garment yourself?’ I replied, ‘I gave it to my wife.’ He said, ‘Tell her to wear a slip underneath it, for I fear it may reveal the contours of her bones.’”
Aḥmad and al-Bayhaqī recorded it on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl, from Muḥammad ibn Usāmah ibn Zayd, from Usāmah.
Al-Haythamī cited the report in al-Majmaʿ, remarking: “It was transmitted by Aḥmad and al-Ṭabarānī. It contains ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl; his narrations are classed as ḥasan, though there is some weakness in him.”
I add: the report is supported by a corroborating narration from Dihyah himself.
Al-Bayhaqī relates—through Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb, from Mūsā ibn Jubayr, from ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, from Khālid ibn Yazīd ibn Muʿāwiyah, from Dihyah ibn Khalīfah—a similar wording. In that version Dihyah is the one to whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave the Coptic garment, saying to him:
“Make one part of it into a shirt, and give another part to your wife so that she may cover her head with it.”
When Dihyah turned to leave, the Prophet ﷺ called him back and said:
“Instruct her to place something underneath it so that it does not cling and reveal.”
This may represent a separate incident. Al-Bayhaqī then observed: “Some narrators call him ʿAbbās ibn ʿUbayd Allāh.” Al-Bukhārī said
