“The established practice among the scholars is that if a woman has reached puberty and performs the prayer while any part of her hair is exposed, her prayer is invalid. This is also the view of al-Shāfiʿī, who said: ‘A woman’s prayer is not valid if any part of her body is uncovered.’ Al-Shāfiʿī further said: ‘It has been said that if the tops of her feet are uncovered, her prayer is still valid.’
7- Her garments—whether a khimār, stockings, or anything else—must not be flimsy or transparent so that they reveal or outline what is beneath them, because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“There will appear at the end of my community women who are clothed yet naked; on their heads are humps like the humps of Bactrian camels. Curse them, for they are accursed.”
In another report he added:
“They will not enter Paradise, nor will they even smell its fragrance, though its fragrance can be detected from such-and-such a distance.”
The first narration was reported by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Ṣaghīr from Ibn ʿAmr with a sound chain, and the second is recorded by Muslim and others from Abū Hurayrah. Both are cited in al-Muṣannaf, so there is no need to document their sources here.
This ḥadith is one of the Prophet’s ﷺ miracles and truthful prophecies granted to him by Allah, for its description fits perfectly the condition of most women in our times. There is no power and no might except with Allah.
Therefore, if she fears any of the matters mentioned, let her wear a slip beneath her clothes, as the Prophet ﷺ instructed, giving the reason in the very same ḥadith: “I fear that it may outline the contours of her bones.”
