(3) Ibn ʿAbbās relates that a woman from the tribe of Khathʿam consulted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Farewell Pilgrimage [on the Day of Sacrifice]. At the time, al-Faḍl ibn ʿAbbās was riding behind the Prophet ﷺ … —the report continues— and al-Faḍl kept turning to look at her, for she was a beautiful woman [and she was looking at him as well]. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took hold of al-Faḍl and turned his face to the other side. Another narrator adds: al-ʿAbbās said, “O Messenger of Allah, why did you twist the neck of your cousin?” He replied, “I saw a young man and a young woman, and I could not trust Satan concerning them.”
Aḥmad and al-Nasāʾī recorded this ḥadīth, and Ibn Ḥazm cited it from them through the chain of Ṣāliḥ ibn Kaysān, from Ibn Shihāb, who said that Sulaymān ibn Yasār informed him that Ibn ʿAbbās narrated it to him.
This chain is authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs, al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
Al-Bukhārī also transmitted it through Shuʿayb from al-Zuhrī in a similar wording that includes the first supplementary detail. Al-Bayhaqī likewise recorded it, and Mālik narrated it in the Muwaṭṭaʾ from Ibn Shihāb with a similar wording that contains the second supplementary detail.
The ḥadīth is likewise found in al-Bukhārī, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, and al-Nasāʾī, as well as Aḥmad, all of them reporting it from Mālik.
Later, al-Nasāʾī, Ibn Mājah, and Aḥmad transmitted it through other routes from al-Zuhrī with a similar wording that preserves the first supplementary detail.
