Nafiʿ that Ibn ʿUmar had clothed him while he was still a youth. Ibn ʿUmar then entered the mosque and found him praying with only a single garment draped across his shoulders. He said, “Do you not have two garments?” Nafiʿ replied, “I do.” Ibn ʿUmar asked, “If I had sought your help behind the house for some task, would you have worn both of them?” He answered, “Yes.” Ibn ʿUmar said, “Allah is more deserving that you adorn yourself for Him than people are.” Nafiʿ responded, “Indeed, for Allah.” Ibn ʿUmar thereupon related a statement that he attributed either to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or to ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him). Nafiʿ commented, “I am certain it came from one of them, and I think it was from none other than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” He said:
“None of you should pray wrapped up in the fashion of the Jews. Whoever owns two garments should gird himself with one and use the other as a cloak; whoever owns only one garment should wrap it round his waist and then perform the prayer.”
He also transmitted the report through ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhab al-Ḥajabī, who said: “Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ayyūb, from Nafiʿ…”—and he repeated it with the very same chain.
I say: Al-Bayhaqī likewise recorded it via Yūsuf ibn Yaʿqūb the judge: “Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us”—with the same isnād, except that it omits Nafiʿ’s statement: “I am certain it came from one of them, and I think it was from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
Abū Dāwūd also reported it: “Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb narrated to us,” with the chain but without the incident. Al-Nawawī remarked in al-Majmūʿ, “Its chain is sound,” and Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah said the same in al-Iqtidaʾ.
Al-Bayhaqī further brought it through Abū al-Rabīʿ: “Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us,” with the wording: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said—or he said: ʿUmar said; but I am more inclined to think he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said.”
