“trustworthy but prone to error (ṣadūq yukhtiʾ).”

As for the ridāʾ (cloak), al-Nihāya defines it as “the garment or mantle that one places over both shoulders and across the back, on top of one’s clothes.” Al-Munjid similarly states: “The ridāʾ is what is worn over other garments, such as an ʿabāʾa or a jubba.”

The ruling arises because omitting the cloak conflicts with the commanded adornment. The Prophet ﷺ said, “When any of you prays, let him wear his two garments, for Allah is more deserving that one adorn himself before Him…” The rest of the ḥadith continues: “If he does not possess two garments, let him use his waist-wrapper when he prays, and none of you should pray wrapped up in the manner of the Jews.”

This narration comes from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him). Al-Ṭaḥāwī recorded it in Sharḥ al-Maʿānī through Ḥafṣ ibn Maysara, from Mūsā ibn ʿUqba, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said…”

Al-Bayhaqī likewise transmitted it via Anas ibn ʿAyyāsh from Mūsā, adding the remark: “Nāfiʿ would attribute it only to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ,” and then cited the report in full.

This chain is ṣaḥīḥ (sound); its transmitters are the men relied upon by the six canonical books. Al-Ṭaḥāwī and Aḥmad also narrated it through Ibn Jurayj, who said, “So-and-so informed me …”
