has indeed placed himself in danger.’ He then greeted the Prophet and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, something occurred between me and the son of al-Khattab. I spoke to him hastily, then regretted it, so I asked him to forgive me but he refused; I have therefore come to you.’ The Prophet ﷺ replied, ‘May Allah forgive you, Abū Bakr,’ repeating it three times.
Later ʿUmar regretted what he had done. He went to Abū Bakr’s house and asked, ‘Is Abū Bakr here?’ They said, ‘No.’ So he went to the Prophet ﷺ, greeted him, and the Prophet’s face reddened with displeasure. Fearing for ʿUmar, Abū Bakr dropped to his knees and said, ‘By Allah, Messenger of Allah, I was the one who acted unjustly’—he said it twice. The Prophet ﷺ then said, ‘Allah sent me to you and you said, “You are lying,” whereas Abū Bakr said, “He speaks the truth.” He supported me with his own self and his wealth. Will you not leave my companion alone?’—he repeated this twice. After that Abū Bakr was never harmed again.
Al-Bukhārī recorded the report, and al-Ṭaḥāwī cited it in Mushkil al-Āthār through the same chain.
Another narration comes from ʿAmr ibn al-Sharīd, from his father, who said: The Prophet ﷺ pursued a man from Thaqīf—even hurrying—until he caught hold of his garment and said, ‘Raise your lower wrap.’ The man uncovered his knees and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, I am bow-legged—my feet turn inward (ḥanaf) and my knees knock together.’ The Prophet ﷺ replied, ‘Every creature Allah has fashioned is beautiful.’ Thereafter no one ever saw that man except that his wrap reached halfway down his shins, until he died.
Aḥmad transmitted this ḥadith, saying: Rūḥ told us; Zakariyyā ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Maysarah narrated that he heard ʿAmr ibn al-Sharīd relate it. Al-Ṭaḥāwī also recorded it in Mushkil al-Āthār through a chain headed by Abū Umayyah, who said: Rūḥ ibn ʿUbādah narrated it to us.
