Al-Dāraqutnī also cited it through Sufyān, but with an added link, saying: “from Zurʿah ibn Muslim, from his father, from his grandfather.”
Thus the narration differs in Sufyān’s version just as it does in Mālik’s, and the two men themselves disagree: Mālik names the transmitter as Zurʿah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jarhad, whereas Sufyān calls him Zurʿah ibn Muslim ibn Jarhad.
Abū al-Zinād diverges from both of them, reporting: “from his uncle, Zurʿah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jarhad, from his grandfather Jarhad,” thereby styling him Zurʿah ibn ʿAbd Allāh. Al-Ṭaḥāwī recorded this wording in al-Mushkil and in the Sharḥ through … (1) from him.
Al-Tirmidhī and Aḥmad transmitted it from Maʿmar, who said: “from Abū al-Zinād— Ibn Jarhad informed me, from his father,” following the same purport.
Another report in Aḥmad and in al-Dāraqutnī runs: “from Sufyān, from Abū al-Zinād” (2).
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl related it from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jarhad, from his father; this version is found in al-Tirmidhī, al-Ṭaḥāwī in the same place, and Aḥmad—each through al-Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ.
Al-Ṭaḥāwī further added, in one of his recensions: “from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muslim ibn Jarhad, from his father, that the Prophet ﷺ said …,” thereby classifying the narration under the musnad of Muslim ibn Jarhad.
