Fourth: once he has repeated the words of the adhān, he should ask for whatever he wishes, whether of this world or the next, for it will be granted to him. A man once said, “Messenger of Allah, the mu’adhdhins have surpassed us.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “Say what they say; then, when you finish, ask, and you shall be given.”
This report comes from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ. It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd and Aḥmad through the chain of Ḥayy ibn ʿAbd Allah, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Hubulī, from him. The chain is hasan. Al-Mundhirī graded this isnād hasan several times in al-Targhīb, as did al-Haythamī, while al-Ḥākim authenticated it in more than one place and al-Dhahabī concurred.
In the entry for Ḥayy ibn ʿAbd Allah in al-Mīzān, al-Dhahabī hints that his ḥadīths are ṣaḥīḥ, yet the more accurate verdict is that they are hasan, for some critics have spoken about him, as al-Dhahabī himself notes in al-Mīzān and elsewhere.
Concerning this ḥadīth, al-Mundhirī says in al-Targhīb: “It was narrated by Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasā’ī, and Ibn Ḥibbān in his Ṣaḥīḥ.” Ibn Ḥajar likewise attributes it to al-Nasā’ī in al-Talkhīṣ, yet it is absent from the smaller Sunan, and al-Nābulusī did not cite it from him in al-Dhakhā’ir. It therefore appears to be in al-Nasā’ī’s al-Sunan al-Kubrā, or in his work ʿAmal al-Yawm wa’l-Laylah— the latter being more likely; Allah knows best.
The ḥadīth also has a supporting chain reported from Abū Umāmah (may Allah be pleased with him) in marfūʿ form, with the wording: “When the caller to prayer gives the call, the gates of heaven are opened and supplication is answered; so whoever is overtaken by distress or…"
