Yaḥyā added, “One of our companions told me that when the caller said, ‘ḥayya ʿala al-ṣalāh,’ Muʿāwiyah answered, ‘la ḥawla wa la quwwata illā billāh (there is no might nor power except with Allah).’ Muʿāwiyah then said, ‘I heard your Prophet say it exactly like this.’”
Al-Bukhārī, al-Dārimī, and Aḥmad all recorded this report.
There is another, shorter route that Aḥmad and al-Nasāʾī relate through Majmaʿ ibn Yaḥyā al-Anṣārī, who said:
“I was standing beside Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl while he faced the muʾadhdhin. When the caller pronounced the takbīr twice, Abū Umāmah repeated the takbīr twice; when the caller bore witness twice that there is no deity but Allah, Abū Umāmah likewise bore witness twice; and when the caller testified twice that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah, Abū Umāmah also testified twice. He then turned to me and said, ‘Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān narrated this to me from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’”
This chain is sound.
Aḥmad likewise transmitted it through Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from ʿĀṣim ibn Bahdalah, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Muʿāwiyah in similar wording; this chain is good.
Ibn al-Sunnī recorded it with an unusual addition ⦗32⦘ via Abū Dāwūd Sulaymān ibn Yūsuf: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wāfid narrated to us, from Naṣīr ibn Ṭarīf, from ʿĀṣim ibn Bahdalah, with the wording:
“Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard the muʾadhdhin say, ‘ḥayya ʿala al-falāḥ (come to success),’ he would respond, ‘Allāhumma ijʿalnā mufliḥīn (O Allah, make us among those who attain success).’”
