This chain includes an unidentified narrator on account of this ʿAmr—namely, ʿAmr ibn ʿAlqamah ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, as noted a little earlier—yet he has a corroborating report. Ibn Jurayj said: “ʿAmr ibn Yaḥyā informed me that ʿĪsā ibn ʿUmar informed him, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAlqamah ibn Waqqāṣ, from ʿAlqamah ibn Waqqāṣ, who said:
‘I was sitting with Muʿāwiyah when his muʾadhdhin gave the adhān. Muʿāwiyah repeated what the muʾadhdhin said until, when he called ḥayya ʿala al-ṣalāh, Muʿāwiyah replied: la ḥawla wa la quwwata illā billāh (there is no might nor power except with Allah). When he called ḥayya ʿala al-falāḥ, Muʿāwiyah again replied: la ḥawla wa la quwwata illā billāh. After that he repeated the remainder of the adhān, then said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say the same.”’
Al-Nasāʾī recorded this version, and it was likewise transmitted by Ibn Ḥazm, al-Ṭaḥāwī, Aḥmad, and Ibn Khuzaymah. Al-Ṭaḥāwī also cited it through another route: Ibn Wahb related to us—Dāwūd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān told me, from ʿAmr ibn Yaḥyā, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAlqamah—omitting ʿĪsā ibn ʿUmar in between. All the narrators in this chain are trustworthy except ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAlqamah; his standing is the same as that of his brother ʿAmr, mentioned earlier.
2 – Hishām al-Dastuwāʾī narrates from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥārith, from ʿĪsā ibn Ṭalḥah, who said:
‘I entered upon Muʿāwiyah, and the caller proclaimed, “Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar,” so Muʿāwiyah responded, “Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar.” He proclaimed, “Ashhadu an lā ilāha illā Allāh,” and Muʿāwiyah answered, “I too bear witness that there is no deity but Allah.” He proclaimed, “Ashhadu anna Muḥammadan rasūl Allāh,” and Muʿāwiyah replied, “And I bear witness that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah.”’
