- Abu Saʿid al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When you hear the call, say what the muʾadhdhin says.”
It is recorded by Malik, and from him by al-Bukhari; likewise by Muslim, Abu Dawud, and al-Nasaʾi; and, on Malik’s authority, by Ibn al-Sunni, al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, al-Tahawi, Ahmad, and al-Khatib—all of them transmitting from Malik, from al-Zuhri, from ʿAtaʾ ibn Yazid al-Laythi, from Abu Saʿid.
Al-Tahawi also narrates it through Ibn Wahb, who said: “Malik and Yunus told me, from Ibn Shihab,” with the same remainder of the chain. Abu ʿAwanah includes it as well, as cited in Fath al-Bari.
Ahmad, in one of his versions, reports it through ʿUthman ibn ʿUmar: “Malik and Yunus ibn Yazid related to us from al-Zuhri.” From this route it is likewise found in al-Darimi and al-Tahawi, though both omit Malik from the chain, and al-Tayalisi transmits it from Ibn al-Mubarak, from Yunus alone.
Malik and Yunus ibn Yazid are contradicted by ʿAbbad ibn Ishaq—or ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Ishaq—who report it from Ibn Shihab, from Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib, from Abu Hurayrah with similar wording traced back to the Prophet ﷺ.
This latter chain is recorded by Ibn Majah and al-Tahawi; al-Tirmidhi cites it in a suspended form and states, “Malik’s version is the more authentic.” The same verdict is given by Ahmad ibn Salih, Abu Hatim, and Abu Dawud, as noted in Fath al-Bari.
