He went on to say, “Wakīʿ narrated to us; al-Aʿmash narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, who said: ‘Our companions related to us that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd al-Anṣārī came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, ‘Messenger of Allah…’” The report is the same except that he added, “So he climbed onto a wall.”
Al-Ṭaḥāwī and Ibn Ḥazm recorded it from Wakīʿ in abridged form, and Ibn Ḥazm remarked, “This isnād is of the highest soundness.” Ibn Khuzaymah and al-Bayhaqī likewise transmitted it through Wakīʿ.
This version clarifies the ambiguity in Shuʿbah’s wording: his phrase “our companions” in fact means the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. For that reason the isnād was declared authentic by Ibn Ḥazm and by Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd as well, as noted in al-Talkhīṣ and Naṣb al-Rāyah. It therefore overturns the objection of those who faulted the ḥadith for a break in the chain or for being mursal on the face of some reports from Ibn Abī Laylā.
Al-Masʿūdī, for instance, narrated it from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, from Muʿādh ibn Jabal in similar wording—this has been mentioned under the first point and will return shortly.
Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh likewise related it from al-Aʿmash, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā.
Aḥmad and ad-Dāraquṭnī reported it with the wording, “He came down upon the stump of a wall.”
Al-Ṭaḥāwī also produced it through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dāwūd, from al-Aʿmash, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd, omitting from the chain any mention of Muʿādh or another Companion.
