“Someone better than me has done this, and the Friday prayer is a binding duty.” Al-Bukhārī ⦗2/77–78⦘, Muslim ⦗2/148⦘, and Ibn Ḥazm ⦗3/142⦘ record the report through several chains.
Abū Dāwūd transmits it with the wording: Ibn ʿAbbās said to his muʾadhdhin on a rainy day, “When you have proclaimed, ‘I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah,’ do not say, ‘Come to prayer.’ Say instead, ‘Pray in your homes.’” The people found this unfamiliar, so he explained, “Someone better than me has done it. Friday prayer is obligatory, but I disliked forcing you to walk through mud and rain.” This wording is likewise related by Al-Bukhārī ⦗2/307⦘, Muslim, and Ibn Mājah ⦗300⦘.

From Ibn ʿUmar, transmitted by Nāfiʿ:
On a bitterly cold night at Ḍajjanān—a mountain near Mecca—Ibn ʿUmar gave the adhān and then announced, “Pray in your dwellings.” He told us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would instruct a muʾadhdhin to call the adhān and then immediately add, “Lo, pray in your dwellings,” on nights of cold or rain while on a journey. Al-Bukhārī ⦗2/89–90⦘, Muslim ⦗2/147⦘, Abū Dāwūd ⦗1/167⦘, and Aḥmad ⦗2/53⦘ record it through ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar. Mālik ⦗1/94⦘, Muḥammad ⦗126⦘, al-Nasāʾī ⦗107⦘, al-Dārimī ⦗292⦘, Muslim, and Abū Dāwūd ⦗2–4 & 10⦘ also relate it from Nāfiʿ via other chains with similar wording. -
ʿAmr ibn Aws said:
A man of Thaqīf informed us that he had heard the Prophet’s ﷺ crier on a rainy night
