The third ḥadith: Anas reported:
“It is part of the Sunnah that when the muʾadhdhin, in the dawn adhān, reaches ‘Come to success,’ he says: ‘Prayer is better than sleep, prayer is better than sleep’—twice.”
Al-Dāraqutnī recorded it (90) through the route of Abū Usāmah—“Ibn ʿAwn narrated to us, from Muḥammad, from him (Anas).”
Ibn Khuzaymah also included it in his Ṣaḥīḥ, and al-Bayhaqī in his Sunan (1/423); the latter stated, “Its isnād is sound.”
Al-Dāraqutnī and al-Ṭaḥāwī likewise transmitted it (1/82) through Hishaym, from Ibn ʿAwn, with the wording: “The tathwīb (additional phrase) in the dawn prayer was that when the muʾadhdhin said, ‘Come to success,’ he would say, ‘Prayer is better than sleep’—twice.”
This wording was also narrated by Ibn al-Sakan, who declared it authentic, as cited in al-Talkhīṣ (3/148).
There are other narrations on this subject, but their chains are weak; whoever wishes may consult Nasb al-Rāyah and al-Talkhīṣ.
Know as well that, to the best of our knowledge, none of the reports explicitly state that the phrase “Prayer is better than sleep” belongs to the second adhān for Fajr. Rather, the narrations fall into two categories: some are explicit that it occurs in the first adhān, such as the first and second ḥadiths; others are unrestricted, without specifying first or second—like the third ḥadith and the reports whose isnāds are not authentic—so these are therefore to be understood as
