ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Saʿd b. ʿAmmār b. Saʿd al-Qaraẓ said: “My father narrated to me from my grandfather, from his father Saʿd.”
This chain is weak; it contains both weakness and an unknown narrator, as I have explained in my notes on the Muʿjam. It is supported, however, by the report of Ibn ʿUmar ﵁ who said: “In the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the adhān was recited in pairs, while the iqāmah was single—except that when the muʾadhdhin said, ‘The prayer is established,’ he would repeat, ‘The prayer is established’ twice.”
Aḥmad recorded it (2/85 & 87)—and this is his wording—as did al-Ṭayālisī (160), Abū Dāwūd (85), al-Nasāʾī (103), al-Dāraquṭnī (88), al-Ḥākim (1/197–198), al-Ṭaḥāwī (1/79–80), and al-Dārimī (1/270), all through the route of Shuʿbah from Abū Jaʿfar the muʾadhdhin, who said: “I heard Abū al-Mathnā relate it from him.”
This isnād is ḥasan. Al-Nawawī (3/95) judged it sound, as did al-Ḥākim, and al-Dhahabī concurred.
Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn Ḥibbān also included it in their Ṣaḥīḥ collections, as noted in Naṣb al-Rāyah (1/262).
Al-Dāraquṭnī provides a further chain, transmitting it through Saʿīd b. al-Mughīrah al-Ṣayyād—who said: “ʿĪsā b. Yūnus narrated to us, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar”—omitting the words “except that…” and so forth. Ibn al-Jawzī commented: “This isnād is sound; Saʿīd b. al-Mughīrah was deemed reliable by Ibn Ḥibbān and others.”
