I once set out with a group and we were on part of the road to Ḥunayn, returning after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had departed from Ḥunayn. We met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ along the way, and his muʾadhdhin announced the prayer in his presence. We heard the caller’s voice while we were off to one side, so we began to mimic him and make fun of him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard the sound and sent for us until we were made to stand before him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Which of you is the one whose voice I heard so loud?” The people pointed at me and spoke truthfully. He dismissed all of them and kept me. Then he said, “Stand and give the call to prayer.” I stood, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself dictated the adhān to me, saying:
“Say: Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar; I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
He then said, “Go back and draw out your voice,” and continued, “Say: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; Come to prayer, come to prayer; Come to success, come to success; Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest; there is no god but Allah.”
When I had finished the call to prayer he summoned me and gave me a purse containing some silver. I said, “Messenger of Allah, command me to make the call to prayer in Mecca.” He replied, “I have already commanded you to do so.” So I went to ʿAttāb b. Asīd, the Messenger of Allah’s governor in Mecca, and I called the people to prayer there by order of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Al-Nasāʾī (103–104) records this wording, and it is likewise transmitted by Ibn Ḥazm (3/151), Ibn Mājah (241–242), al-Ṭaḥāwī (78), al-Dāraquṭnī (86), and Aḥmad (3/409). All—except al-Nasāʾī—add at the end: “Those of my family who met Abū Maḥdhūrah informed me of the same.”
