“Let each man take hold of the head-rope of his mount, for a devil has attended us at this campsite.” We did so, after which he asked for water, performed ablution, and prostrated twice. When the iqamah was given he offered the dawn prayer.
Both al-Bukhari and Muslim transmitted this through the chain: Yahya ibn Saʿid → Yazid ibn Kaysan → Abu Hazim → Abu Hurayrah.
It has another route, reported by Abu Dawud (72) from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhri, from Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib, from Abu Hurayrah, in which the Prophet said: “Move away from the spot where heedlessness overtook you.” He then ordered Bilal, who pronounced the adhan and the iqamah, and he prayed. Its chain is sound according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs.
A third route carries the wording: “This is a campsite in which there is a devil,” recorded by al-Tahawi (234).
- The missed prayer is to be performed exactly as it is on any other day: with adhan and iqamah; the recitation is aloud if it is normally aloud, and the regular sunnah units are offered with it.
In the lengthy narration of Abu Qatadah concerning their oversleeping the dawn prayer he said: “Bilal then gave the adhan, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two rakʿahs, and then he performed the dawn prayer, doing exactly what he does every day.” Muslim recorded it through the route of Sulayman ibn al-Mughira, as mentioned earlier.
A similar report from Abu Hurayrah states: “He instructed Bilal, who gave the adhan and the iqamah, and he prayed.”
