“Firm against the disbelievers and compassionate among themselves” [al-Fath: 29]. And He Most High says, “And they love Him, humble toward the believers and mighty against” [al-Mā’idah: 54].
Thus, when Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) assumed authority, they attained completeness in governance. The traits for which they had respectively been associated with opposite ends of the spectrum during the Prophet’s lifetime—one’s gentleness and the other’s severity—came into balance in them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) even said regarding them, “Follow the two who come after me: Abu Bakr and Umar” (1).
(1) Recorded by Ahmad (23276), al-Tirmidhī (3662), Ibn Mājah (97), Ibn Hibbān (6902), and al-Hākim (3/75), through Rib'ī ibn Hirāsh, from Hudhayfa (may Allah be pleased with him). Al-Tirmidhī said, “This is a hasan hadith.” Al-Uqaylī stated in *al-Du'afā'* (4/94–95), “It is narrated from Hudhayfa through sound chains by which it is established.” Ibn Hibbān graded it authentic, and al-Hākim said, “This is among the most eminent hadiths narrated concerning the merits of the two shaykhs, Abū Bakr and Umar. This chain from al-Thawrī has been correctly preserved … Thus, what we have mentioned establishes the authenticity of this hadith, although al-Bukhārī and Muslim did not record it.” Ibn al-Mulaqqin graded it hasan in *al-Budayr al-Munīr* (9/578).
It has a corroborating narration in the hadith of Ibn Mas'ūd, recorded by al-Tirmidhī (3805), al-Bazzār in *al-Kashf* (2679), al-Tabarānī in *al-Kabīr* (8458) and *al-Awsat* (3828), and al-Hākim (3/75–76). Al-Tirmidhī said, “This is a hasan gharīb hadith through this route from Ibn Mas'ūd. We know it only through the narration of Yahyā ibn Salama ibn Kuhayl, and Yahyā ibn Salama is considered weak in hadith.” Al-Hākim, however, said that it has an authentic chain.
