anyone you dislike to tread on your bedding. If they do so, then strike them, but not severely. They are entitled to their provision and clothing from you in accordance with what is reasonable.”

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also said, “Whenever a husband calls his wife to his bed and she refuses him, He who is in heaven remains angry with her until morning.” Both al-Bukhārī and Muslim recorded it in their Sahih collections (1).

He also said, “Were I to command anyone to prostrate to another, I would command a wife to prostrate to her husband.” (2)

Ahmad and Ibn Mājah narrated from ‘Abdullāh ibn Abī Awfā, who said: Mu‘ādh came to Syria and saw the Christians prostrating to their patriarchs and bishops. He thought to himself that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was more deserving of such honor. When he returned, he said, “O Messenger of Allah, I saw the Christians prostrating to their patriarchs and bishops, and I thought to myself that you were more deserving of such honor.” He replied, “Were I to command anyone to prostrate to another, I would command a wife to prostrate to her husband. A woman does not fully discharge the right of Allah Most High until she fully discharges her husband’s right; even if he asked her to give herself to him while she was atop a camel saddle, she would give herself to him.” (3)

The jurists agree that he has the right to intimacy with her whenever he wishes, provided that he does not harm

(1) Narrated by al-Bukhārī (5194) and Muslim (1436), from the hadith of Abū Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him. (2) Narrated by al-Tirmidhī (1159), Ibn Hibbān (4162), and al-Bayhaqī (7/291). Al-Tirmidhī said, “This is a fair but uncommon hadith through this chain of transmission.” Ibn Hibbān graded it authentic. It is corroborated by hadiths from Ā’isha, Anas, Qays ibn Saʿd, Muʿādh, and Ibn Abī Awfā—the last of which is cited below—may Allah be pleased with them. (3) Narrated by Ahmad (19403), Ibn Mājah (1853), Ibn Hibbān (4171), and al-Bayhaqī (7/292). See the preceding note.
