said, “The testimony of a person suspected—that is, accused of partiality—because of clientage or kinship is not admissible” (1) (2).

For this purpose, a widely circulated report—or even information falling short of that—is sufficient (3). A man’s character may even be inferred from his associates, as Ibn Masud said, “Assess people by their close companions” (4). This is because the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “A person follows the religion of his close friend, so let each of you consider whom he befriends” (5). The purpose of this (6) is to ward off his harm, just as one takes precautions against an enemy. And Umar said

(1) This is an excerpt from a hadith narrated from ʿĀʾisha, may Allah be pleased with her, by al-Tirmidhī (2298), al-Dāraqutnī (4:244)—without this wording—and al-Bayhaqī (10:155). Al-Tirmidhī said, “This is a gharīb hadith. We know it only through Yazīd ibn Ziyād al-Dimashqī. Yazīd is considered weak in hadith, and this hadith is known among al-Zuhrī’s narrations only through him… In my view, it is not authentic because of its chain of transmission.” Abū Zurʿa al-Rāzī said in *al-ʿIlal* (1428), “It is munkar, and it was not read to us.” Most hadith masters also graded it weak. See *al-Badr al-Munīr* (9:627–628). (2) The passage from “Thus, the grounds for suspicion would be…” to this point occurs in the original. (3) The remaining manuscripts read: “Direct observation is therefore unnecessary; rather, a widely circulated report…” (4) Narrated by al-Tabarānī in *al-Kabīr* (8919). (5) Narrated from Abū Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him, by Ahmad (8028), Abū Dāwūd (4833), al-Tirmidhī (2378), and others. Al-Tirmidhī graded it *hasan gharīb*; al-Nawawī graded it *sahīh* in *al-Riyād* (p. 144); al-Suyūtī graded it *hasan* in *al-Laʾāliʾ al-Masnūʿa*; and al-Albānī graded it *sahīh* in *al-Sahīha* (927). (6) The passage from “This is because the Prophet…” to this point occurs in the original. In the remaining manuscripts, the passage begins: “This is to ward off his harm…”
