Abū Hatim al-Bustī (1) also narrated in his Sahīh (2) the lengthy hadith reported by Abū Dharr (3) from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, which contains many kinds of knowledge and wisdom. It includes the following: “Among the wisdom of the House (4) of David was this: It is incumbent upon a person of reason that [he have four] (5) periods of time: a time when he communes privately with his Lord; a time when he calls himself to account; a time when he meets privately with companions who inform him of his faults and speak to him about himself; and a time when he retires to enjoy his pleasure (6) in that which

(1) This is absent from the original. (2) No. 361, as part of a lengthy hadith. It was also narrated by Ibn Hibbān in *al-Majrūhīn* (2/130), Abū Nuaym in *al-Hilya* (1/166–167), and others, through Ibrāhīm ibn Hishām ibn Yahyā al-Ghassānī, from his father, from his grandfather, from Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī, from Abū Dharr, transmitting the hadith in full. Regarding this Ibrāhīm, Abū Hātim and Abū Zura said: “He is a liar.” See *al-Jarh wa-l-Tadīl* (2/143). Ibn Hibbān, however, included him in *al-Thiqāt* (8/79), for which al-Dhahabī criticized him in *al-Mīzān* (1/72–73). Ibn al-Jawzī went too far by including the hadith in *al-Mawduāt*; Ibn Hajar and al-Suyūtī objected to this judgment, as recorded in *al-Kāf al-Shāf* (4/114) and *al-Durr al-Manthūr* (2/436). The hadith has other chains of transmission, but Ibn Rajab said in *Fath al-Bārī* (3/273): “It has been narrated from Abū Dharr through several chains, none of which is free of criticism.” In *al-Fatāwā* (7/409), the author states what indicates that Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Muhammad ibn Nasr did not regard this hadith as established. (3) The original reads: “Abī Dāwūd, Abī Dharr,” which is an inadvertent error. (4) The word *Āl* (“House of”) is absent from (ظ، ب، ل). The author’s phrase “the wisdom of the House of David” does not occur in Abū Dharr’s narration of the hadith. It appears instead in a report from Wahb ibn Munabbih—which follows the same wording as the author’s passage—narrated by Abd al-Razzāq (11/22) and al-Bayhaqī in *al-Shuab* (4352). (5) Omitted from the original. (6) (ي) reads: “for his own pleasure.”
