Al-Siyasa al-Shar'iyyaIbn Taimiya

This is something a man needs in governing himself, his household, and those under his authority. Souls do not accept (1) the truth unless aided by the worldly benefits they need; with a sound intention, those benefits themselves become worship of and obedience to Allah. Do you not see that eating, drinking, and clothing oneself are obligatory? Indeed, if someone is compelled by necessity to eat carrion, he must eat it according to the majority of scholars. If he refuses to eat and dies as a result, he will enter the Fire, for acts of worship cannot be performed without these necessities, and whatever is indispensable to fulfilling an obligation is itself obligatory.

For this reason, a person’s spending on himself and his family takes precedence over spending on others. The Sunan collections relate that Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Give in charity.” A man said, “Messenger of Allah, I have one dinar.” He replied, “Spend it on yourself as charity.” The man said, “I have another.” He replied, “Spend it on your wife.” He said, “I have another.” He replied, “Spend it on your child.” (2) He said, “I have another.” He replied, “Spend it on your servant.” He said, “I have another.” He replied, “You know best what to do with it.” (3)

In Sahīh Muslim (4), Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah

(1) (ي) reads: “render [what is due].” (2) The words “He said, ‘I have another.’ He replied, ‘Spend it on your wife’” are absent from the original and (ز). The passage concerning the child is repeated in (ظ). (3) Narrated by Ahmad (7417), Abū Dāwūd (1691), al-Nasā’ī (2535), al-Bukhārī in *al-Adab al-Mufrad* (197), Ibn Hibbān (4235), and al-Hākim (1/415). Ibn Hibbān authenticated the hadith, and al-Hākim said that it is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria. Al-Albānī graded it hasan in *al-Irwā* (895). (4) (995). The passage beginning “and a dinar you spent toward freeing a slave” and ending “on a poor person” is absent from (ف).
