we seek help.” [al-Fātihah: 5] It has been said that they (1) encompass the meanings of the Books sent down from heaven.
It has been narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), during one of his military expeditions, once said: “O Master of the Day of Judgment, You alone we worship, and You alone we seek for help,” whereupon heads began falling (2) from shoulders (3).
Allah has mentioned this in more than one place in His Book, as in His words: “So worship Him and put your trust in Him” (4) [Hūd: 123], and His words, Most High: “In Him I have put my trust, and to Him I turn in repentance” [Hūd: 88]. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered his sacrificial animal, he would say: “O Allah, it is from You and for You.” (5)
(1) (ظ، ب): “It has indeed been said that these two words encompass.”
(2) The original reads: “*tabdur* (fly off).”
(3) Recorded by al-Tabarānī in *al-Awsat* (8159) and *al-Duā’* (1033), and by Ibn al-Sunnī in *Amal al-Yawm wa-al-Laylah* (334), from the hadith of Anas, on the authority of Abū Talhah. Its wording is: “He said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a military expedition when we encountered the enemy. I heard him say, ‘O Master of the Day of Judgment, You alone we worship, and You alone we seek for help.’ I then saw men being struck down as the angels smote them from before and behind.”
Al-Tabarānī said: “This hadith is narrated from Abū Talhah only through this chain, and Abū al-Rabī alone transmitted it. I heard Mūsā ibn Hārūn say: I asked Uthmān ibn Tālūt about Hanbal, and he replied, ‘They say that he was a man from Banū Quray.’ I also asked him about Abd al-Salām ibn Hāshim, and he said, ‘An elderly shaykh from Basra.’ I asked, ‘Was he trustworthy?’ He replied, ‘I know nothing but good of him.’”
Al-Haythamī said in *al-Majma* (5/592): “It was narrated by al-Tabarānī in *al-Awsat*, and its chain contains Abd al-Salām ibn Hāshim, who is weak.” I could not locate the wording quoted by the author. The author did, however, cite the report with the wording given above in his book *al-Kalim al-Tayyib* (p. 30).
(4) The verse is omitted in (ز).
(5) Recorded by Ahmad (15022), Abū Dāwūd (2795), Ibn Mājah (3121), al-Dārimī (1989), Ibn Khuzaymah (2899), al-Hākim (1/467), al-Bayhaqī (9/287), and others, from the hadith of Jābir ibn Abd Allāh (may Allah be pleased with them both). Ibn Khuzaymah graded the hadith authentic, and al-Hākim said: “It is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.” Al-Albānī also graded it authentic in *al-Irwā’* (1152).
