at night and fasts by day.”
It is related in the two Sahīh collections (1) that a man said, “O Messenger of Allah, tell me of something equal to jihad in Allah’s cause.” He replied, “You are not capable of it.” The man said, “Then tell me what it is.” He replied, “When the one engaged in jihad sets out, can you fast without breaking your fast and stand in prayer without pause?” The man replied, “No.” [He replied], “That is what equals (2) jihad.”
It is related in the Sunan collections that he said: “Every nation has its form of ascetic wandering, and my nation’s is jihad in Allah’s cause.” (3)
This is a vast subject. Nothing comparable to what has been reported about it has been reported concerning the reward and merit of any other deed. This is evident upon reflection, for the benefit of jihad extends both to the one who undertakes it and to others, in religious and worldly affairs. It encompasses every form of inward and outward worship. It encompasses what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, loves (4), as well as sincerity to Him, reliance upon Him, and surrendering oneself and one’s wealth
