for you to fight, though it is hateful to you. Perhaps you dislike something that is good for you, and perhaps you love something that is bad for you. Allah knows, while you do not know.” [al-Baqara: 216]

He further affirmed that it was obligatory and emphasized the gravity of jihad in most of the Medinan surahs. He condemned those who failed to undertake it, describing them as hypocrites with diseased hearts. He said, exalted is He:

“Say, ‘If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your spouses, your kindred, the wealth you have acquired, the trade whose decline you fear, and the dwellings in which you delight are dearer to you than Allah, His Messenger, and jihad in His cause, then wait until Allah brings about His command. Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.’” [al-Tawba: 24]

He also said, exalted is He:

“The believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger, then entertain no doubt, and wage jihad with their wealth and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is they who are truthful.” [al-Hujurāt: 15]

He also said, exalted is He:

“When a definitive surah is revealed and fighting is mentioned in it, you see those with diseased hearts looking at you like one overcome by death. Yet what would be more fitting for them (20) is obedience and proper speech. Then, once the matter has been resolved, it would be better for them if they were true to Allah.” [Muhammad: 20–21]

Jihad and those who undertake it are likewise greatly extolled, as in His words (1):

“O you who believe, shall I direct you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment? (10) Believe in Allah and His Messenger and wage jihad in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives. That is better for you, if only you knew. (11) He will forgive your sins and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow and pleasant dwellings in Gardens of Eternity. That is the supreme triumph. (12) And He will grant you another blessing that you love: victory from Allah and an imminent conquest. Give glad tidings to the believers.” [al-Saff: 10–13]

And in His words, exalted is He:

“Do you regard those who provide water to the pilgrims and tend the Sacred Mosque as equal to those who believe in Allah and the Last Day and wage jihad in the cause of Allah? They are not equal before Allah, and Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people. (19) Those who believe, emigrate, and wage jihad in the cause of Allah with their wealth and
