The two Sahīh collections (3) relate that Aisha—may Allah be pleased with her—[أ/ق 41] reported that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “A thief’s hand (4) is to be amputated for a quarter of a dinar or more.” Another narration in Muslim (5) states: “A thief’s hand is not to be amputated except for a quarter of a dinar or more.” In a narration by al-Bukhārī (6), he said: “Carry out amputation for a quarter of a dinar, but do not do so for anything less than that.” At that time, a quarter of a dinar equaled three dirhams, while a dinar equaled twelve dirhams.
