Al-Siyasa al-Shar'iyyaIbn Taimiya

for a man to support his people when they are in the right?” He replied, “No. Rather, tribal partisanship is for a man to support his people when they are in the wrong.”

He also said, “The best among you is the defender (1) of his people, so long as he does not sin.” (2)

He also said, “The likeness of one who supports his people in wrongdoing is that of a camel that has fallen into a well and is being pulled by its tail.” (3)

He also said, “Whenever you hear someone invoking the rallying cries of the Age of Ignorance, tell him to bite his father’s member, and do not use a euphemism.” (4) That is, say to him, “Bite your father’s penis.” (5)

(1) Manuscripts (Y), (Z), (ظ), and (L) read: “the one who defends.” This is also the wording of Ibn Abī Āsim’s narration in *al-Āhād wa-l-Mathānī* (1033), from Abd Allah al-Mudlijī—may Allah be pleased with him. (2) Narrated by Abū Dāwūd (5120) and al-Tabarānī in *al-Awsat* (6989), from Surāqa ibn Mālik—may Allah be pleased with him. Abū Dāwūd graded it weak because of Ayyūb ibn Suwayd, while Abū Hātim al-Rāzī judged it fabricated in *al-Ilal* (2117). (3) Narrated by Abū Dāwūd (5118, 5117), al-Tayālisī (342), Ahmad (3726), and al-Bayhaqī (10/234), from Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abd Allah ibn Masūd—may Allah be pleased with him—in both *marfū* (attributed to the Prophet) and *mawqūf* (attributed to the Companion) forms. There is disagreement over whether Abd al-Rahmān heard this report from his father, although some direct hearing from him is established. It was authenticated by Ahmad Shākir in his *Commentary on al-Musnad* (5/274), and by al-Albānī in *Sahīh Abī Dāwūd*. (4) Narrated by Ahmad (21256), al-Nasāī in *al-Kubrā* (8813), Ibn Hibbān in *al-Ihsān* (3153), al-Tabarānī in *al-Kabīr* (532), and others, from Ubayy ibn Kab—may Allah be pleased with him. Ibn Hibbān authenticated it, and al-Haythamī said of al-Tabarānī’s chain of transmission: “Its narrators are trustworthy.” *Al-Majma* (3/3). (5) The sentence following the hadith appears only in the base text.
