Thus, the two Sahīh collections (1) relate that Abū Saīd al-Khudrī—may Allah be pleased with him—said: While Alī was in Yemen, he sent the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—a small piece of gold still mixed with earth. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—divided it among four men: al-Aqra ibn Hābis al-Hanzalī, Uyayna ibn Badr (2) al-Fazārī, Alqama ibn Ulātha al-Āmirī, a member (3) of Banū Kilāb, and Zayd al-Khayr (4) al-Tā’ī, a member of Banū Nabhān.
He continued: Quraysh and the Ansar became angry and said, “He gives to the chieftains of Najd and leaves us out?!” The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace[أ/ق 22]—said, “I did that only to win them over.” Then a man came with a thick beard, high cheekbones, deep-set eyes, a prominent forehead, and a shaven head. He said, “Fear Allah, Muhammad!” The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—replied, “Then who would obey Allah if I were to disobey Him? Does Allah deem me trustworthy over the people of the earth while you do not trust me?”
He continued: The man then turned away. One of those present sought permission to kill him—they thought it was Khālid ibn al-Walīd—but the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “From this man’s stock will come people who recite the Quran, but it will not pass beyond their throats. They will kill Muslims and leave the idolaters alone. They will pass out of Islam just as an arrow passes through its quarry. If I encounter them, I will surely kill them as the people of Ād were killed.”
Rāfi ibn Khadīj related that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—gave Abū Sufyān ibn Harb, Safwān ibn Umayya, Uyayna ibn Hisn, and al-Aqra ibn Hābis one hundred each
