the creation, and He placed me among the best of His creation. He then made them two divisions (1) and put me in the best division. He fashioned the tribes and placed me in the best tribe; He formed the households and placed me in the best household. Thus I am the best of you in household and the best of you in person.” (2)
May God’s unceasing blessings and peace be upon him until the Day of Judgment.
Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān said (3): ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā narrated to us, from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Nawfal, from al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, who said:
I said, “Messenger of God, whenever the Quraysh meet one another they greet each other with cheerfulness, but when they meet us they greet us with faces we do not recognize.”
At this the Messenger of God ﷺ became extremely angry and said, “By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, faith will not enter a man’s heart until he loves you for the sake of God and His Messenger.”
I then said, “Messenger of God, the Quraysh sat together discussing their lineages, and they likened you to a date-palm growing in a hollow of the earth.” (4)
The Messenger of God ﷺ replied, “On the day God created the creation He placed me among the best of them; when He separated them He put me in the best of the two groups; when He made the tribes He placed me in the best tribe; and when He made the households He placed me in the best household. Therefore I am the best of them in person and the best of them in household.”
Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah (5) narrated the same report from Ibn Fuḍayl, from Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith, from [ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn] Rabiʿah ibn al-Ḥārith. He said: News of this reached the Prophet ﷺ, who then spoke in similar terms, but without mentioning al-ʿAbbās.
Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān also said (6): Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd related to me, Qays ibn ʿAbd Allāh (7) related to us, from al-Aʿmash, from ʿAbāyah ibn Ribʿī, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
The Messenger of God ﷺ declared, “God divided the creation into two groups and placed me in the best of the two. This is expressed in His words: ‘The companions of the right… and the companions of the left’ (al-Wāqiʿah 56:27, 41). I am of the companions of the right, and I am the best of the companions of the right. He then divided the two groups into thirds and placed me in the best of the thirds, as in His saying—”
