Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

This ḥadīth, reported on the authority of Mālik, is extremely rare; al-Qudāmī alone transmitted it, and he is weak (1). Nevertheless, we shall adduce supporting reports from other lines of transmission.

Among them is the Prophet’s statement:

“I was brought forth through lawful marriage, not through fornication.”

ʿAbd al-Razzāq (2) said: Ibn ʿUyaynah told us, from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad, from his father Abū Jaʿfar al-Bāqir, regarding the verse, ‘There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves’ (al-Tawbah 9:128). He said, “Nothing of the births of the Age of Ignorance touched him.” He further related that the Messenger of God ﷺ said:

“I came forth from lawful wedlock; I did not come forth from fornication.”

This is a sound mursal report.

Al-Bayhaqī (3) transmitted it in like manner from al-Ḥākim, from al-Aṣamm, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq al-Ṣaghānī (4), from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Bukayr, from ʿAbd al-Ghaffār ibn al-Qāsim, from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad, from his father, who said that the Messenger of God ﷺ declared:

“God brought me forth from lawful marriage; He did not bring me forth from fornication.”

Ibn ʿAdī (5) narrated it with a continuous chain, saying: Aḥmad ibn Ḥafṣ told us; Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿUmar al-ʿAdanī al-Makkī (6) told us; Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn said: I bear witness that my father related to me from his father, from his grandfather, from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“I issued from lawful wedlock, never from illicit union, from the time of Adam until my father and mother bore me; none of the fornication of the Age of Ignorance ever touched me.”

This chain is unusual and scarcely authentic (7).

Hushaym said: al-Madīnī related to us, from Abū al-Ḥuwayrith, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said that the Messenger of God ﷺ declared:

“None of the marriages of the Age of Ignorance produced me; I was produced only from a marriage like the marriages practiced in Islam.”

(1) Ibn Ḥibbān records it in al-Majrūḥīn, vol. 2, pp. 39–40. (2) Abd al-Razzāq in Tafsīr al-Ṭabarī, vol. 11, p. 76 (Cairo: ‘Īsā al-Bābī al-Ḥalabī, 1373 / 1954). It appears this hadith is transmitted in Abd al-Razzāq’s tafsīr and is likewise found in al-Musannaf, vol. 7, p. 303 (no. 13273), Kitāb al-Talaq, Bāb al-Da‘wa, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj from Ja‘far baḥ, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I have been exempted from nikāḥ (marriage) but not from ṣifāḥ (fornication).” (3) I did not find it in al-Dalā’il. (4) In both the manuscript and the printed edition it reads al-San‘ānī—a scribal error. The corrected reading is confirmed in al-Lubāb, vol. 2, pp. 229, 243. His biography appears in Siyar A‘lām al-Nubalā’, vol. 12, p. 592. (5) I did not find the hadith in al-Kāmil by Ibn ‘Adī; rather, it is narrated by Ibn ‘Asākir in Tārīkh Dimashq, vol. 3, p. 402, via Ibn ‘Adī. (6) In the manuscript: Muḥammad ibn Abī ‘Umar al-‘Adawī al-Mālikī. In the printed edition: Muḥammad ibn Abī ‘Amr al-‘Adnī al-Makkī. The correct form, as established in al-Kāmil by Ibn ‘Adī and al-Ikmāl, vol. 6, p. 403; al-Ansāb by al-Sim‘ānī, vol. 8, p. 408; and Lisān al-Mīzān, vol. 5, p. 103, is that his kunya was Abū ‘Umar, his nisba al-‘Adawī, and his father’s name Yaḥyā. See his biography in Siyar A‘lām al-Nubalā’, vol. 12, p. 96, and Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb, vol. 9, p. 518. (7) Aḥmad ibn Ḥafs rejects the hadith (al-Kāmil, vol. 1, pp. 202–203), and Muḥammad ibn Ja‘far critically examines it (al-Kāmil, vol. 6, p. 2232; Lisān al-Mīzān, vol. 3, p. 500). It is also mursal, so the compiler’s assessment is correct.
