She was Fāṭimah bint Mur of the tribe of Khathʿam. When she saw the light of prophethood shining in ʿAbd Allāh’s face she said, “Young man, would you lie with me now and I will give you one hundred camels?”
ʿAbd Allāh replied in rajaz verse:
“As for the forbidden—death itself stands before it;
The lawful?—I see no lawful course made plain.
So how could I do the thing you seek,
When the noble shields his honour and his faith?”
He then went on with his father, who married him to Āminah bint Wahb ibn ʿAbd Manāf ibn Zuhrah, and he stayed with her three nights. Afterwards his soul inclined toward what the soothsayer had invited him to, so he returned to her.
She asked, “What have you done since we last met?” He told her, whereupon she said, “By Allah, I am not a woman of suspicion, but I saw a light upon your face and wished it might be in me. Yet Allah would only place it where He willed.”
Fāṭimah then recited (in Kāmil metre):
“I saw a flashing omen blaze—
A glitter that gleamed like rain-washed pearls;
From it I thought a light would shine,
Illuminating all around like the full moon.
I hoped to gain a glory I could claim—
Not every striker of flint kindles a spark!
By Allah, a woman of Zuhrah has stripped you
Of two bright robes you never knew were gone.”
She also composed (in Ṭawīl metre):
“O sons of Hāshim, your brother’s wife has carried off
A treasure while the rivals strove for the prize,
Like a lamp that, when its flame goes out,
Leaves wicks already steeped in oil.
Not all a youth amasses of ancestral wealth
Comes through prudence, nor is all he loses due to neglect.
Therefore pursue your aim with grace, for when you seek aright
Two mighty forces will contend to serve you:
Either a hand clenched firm in resolve,
Or a hand outspread in open generosity.
When Āminah gained from him what she gained,
She gained a pride for which there is no equal.”
