He said:
I passed the night in a valley where I could not feel safe from death, and had no reliance except my sword. Thus I lay awake, keeping my eye on the stars and staring into the darkness. When the night had deepened and dawn was about to breathe, a caller cried out to me:
[rajaz]
“O sleeper wrapped in the night’s thick gloom,
God has raised a Prophet in the Sacred Sanctuary—
from Hāshim, a clan of loyalty and generosity—
one who dispels the layers of darkness and gloom.”
He said: I looked all around but saw no form and heard no foot-fall. Then I answered:
[rajaz]
“O herald who has spoken in the darkest night,
welcome! an auspicious vision that has appeared.
Make clear—may God guide you by the turn of your words—
what it is that you summon us to, that we may seize its benefit.”
He said: Then I heard a throat being cleared and a voice proclaiming:
“The light has dawned, falsehood has vanished, and God has sent Muhammad with glad tidings—the rider of the red camel, bearer of the crown and the helmet, the radiant face, the bright brow, the wide, limpid eyes. He proclaims the testimony that there is no deity but God. This is Muhammad, sent to black and white alike, to the dwellers of towns and the tent-dwelling nomads.”
Then he recited:
[majzūʾ rajaz]
“Praise be to God, who
did not create creation in vain;
He never left us neglected
after Jesus, but cared for us.
He sent among us Aḥmad,
the finest Prophet ever sent;
may God bless him for as long
as pilgrims hasten to His House.”
