She was reddish-brown in complexion and wheat-colored, with flowing side-locks, tall and graceful, straight-nosed, well-proportioned in build and stature, firm-ankled, shapely-legged, full-thighed, (1) slender-waisted, slim-flanked, and smooth of back.
He said: “When I saw her I was struck by her beauty and thought to myself, ‘I shall ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to allot her to me as part of my share.’ Yet when she spoke, I forgot her beauty altogether, so impressed was I by her eloquence.
“She said, ‘O Muḥammad, if you would, set me free and do not let the tribes of Arabia gloat over me. I am the daughter of my people’s chieftain. My father protected the weak, ransomed captives, filled the hungry, clothed the naked, honored the guest, fed the wayfarer, spread peace, and never turned away anyone in need. She replied, “Everything about him was astonishing. A year of drought struck that stripped all things bare; the earth shriveled, the sky turned dusty, nursing mothers withheld their milk, and the camels came back hunch-backed and wasted, yielding not a single drop. Our wealth was gone. One night—dark and endless—the children, ʿAbd Allāh, ʿAdī, and Saffānah, began to cry from hunger, and by Allah we had nothing with which to soothe them. So he rose and went over to one of the children…" (4)(5)(6)(7)(8)
