Manṣūr al-Rāzī related to us; Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣalt related to us; Qays ibn al-Rabīʿ, from Sālim al-Afṭaṣ, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās:
He said: The daughter of Khālid ibn Sinān came to the Prophet ﷺ, whereupon he spread out his cloak for her and said, “The daughter of a prophet whom his people neglected.”(1)
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bazzār also transmitted it from Yaḥyā ibn al-Muʿallā ibn Manṣūr, from Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣalt, from Qays, from Sālim, from Saʿīd, from Ibn ʿAbbās. He reported: Khālid ibn Sinān was mentioned in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, “That was a prophet whom his people abandoned.” He then remarked, “We know of no report elevated to the Prophet except through this chain.”(2)
Qays ibn al-Rabīʿ was trustworthy in himself, yet his memory was weak, and his son would insert into his narrations material that did not belong.(3) Allah knows best.
Al-Bazzār added: Al-Thawrī narrated it as well from Sālim al-Afṭaṣ, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, as a mursal report.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī said: Al-Muʿallā ibn al-Mahdī al-Mawṣilī related to us;(4) he said: Abū ʿAwnah related to us, from Abū Yūnus, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās:
A man of the tribe of ʿAbs named Khālid ibn Sinān said to his people, “I shall extinguish for you the Fire of al-Ḥarratayn.” One of his clansmen replied, “By Allah, Khālid, you have never told us anything but the truth. Yet what do you have to do with the Fire of al-Ḥarratayn, claiming you can put it out?”
Khālid then set out, accompanied by a group of his people from ʿAbs—including ʿAmārah ibn Ziyād—until they reached it. They found the fire issuing from a cleft in a mountain. Khālid drew a line for them and seated them within it, saying, “If I am long delayed, do not call me by my name.”
The fire emerged like light-chestnut horses, each following the other. Khālid confronted it, striking it with his staff and reciting:
“Depart, depart, depart—every guidance shall reach its goal!
The son of the goat-herd’s wife claims I will not come out of it with my clothes damp!”
He continued until he entered the crevice along with the fire, and he tarried. ʿAmārah ibn Ziyād said to the people, “Had your companion been alive, he would have come out to you by now; call him by his name.”
They said, “He forbade us to call him by his name,” but they called him nonetheless. He emerged, holding his head, and said, “Did I not forbid you to call me by my name? By Allah, you have killed me. Carry me and bury me. When the asses pass by you, among them an ass with a docked tail, exhume me; you will find me alive.”
So they carried him and buried him. Then the asses passed by, and among them was an ass with a docked tail.
