Asad, Asadah, and al-Hawn. Abū Jaʿfar al-Ṭabarī (1) adds to these four sons of Kinānah: ʿĀmir, al-Ḥārith, al-Naḍr, Ghanm, Saʿd, ʿAwf, Jarwal, al-Hidāl, and Ghazwān.
He also relates that Kinānah fathered al-Naḍr, Mālik, ʿAbd Manāh, and Milkān (2).
A discourse (3) on Quraysh—their genealogy, the derivation of their name, and their distinction: they are the descendants of al-Naḍr ibn Kinānah.
Ibn Isḥāq (4) said: The mother of al-Naḍr was Barra bint Mur ibn Add ibn Ṭābikhah, whereas his remaining sons were by another wife (5). Ibn Hishām disagreed, maintaining that Barra bint Mur was the mother of al-Naḍr, Mālik, and Milkān, while the mother of ʿAbd Manāh was Hālah bint Suwayd ibn al-Ghuṭarīf of Azd Shanūʾah.
Ibn Hishām said:
“Al-Naḍr is Quraysh; whoever traces his descent to him is a Qurashī, and whoever does not is not a Qurashī.”
He also said:
“It is (also) said that Fihr ibn Mālik is Quraysh; whoever traces his descent to him is a Qurashī, and whoever does not is not a Qurashī.”
Both views have been transmitted by several masters of genealogy (6)—among them Shaykh Abū ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, al-Zubayr ibn Bakkār, Muṣʿab, and others (7).
Abū ʿUbayd and Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr said: “The position held by the majority is that Quraysh refers to al-Naḍr ibn Kinānah, on the strength of the ḥadīth of al-Ashʿath ibn Qays.”
I say: This is likewise the explicit statement of Hishām ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Sāʾib al-Kalbī and Abū ʿUbaydah Maʿmar ibn al-Muthannā, and it is the standard position adopted by al-Shāfiʿī—may Allah have mercy on him.
Abū ʿUmar later opted for the view that Quraysh is Fihr ibn Mālik, arguing that no one alive today who claims Qurashī descent can trace his lineage except through Fihr ibn Mālik. He further reported that this was the preferred opinion of al-Zubayr ibn Bakkār, Muṣʿab al-Zubayrī, and ʿAlī ibn Kaysān, saying:
“To them belongs the final authority in this matter.”
Al-Zubayr ibn Bakkār said:
“The genealogists of Quraysh—and of other tribes—are unanimous that Quraysh branched out from Fihr ibn Mālik, and what I heard from the genealogists of Quraysh whom I met (8) is that the descendants of …”
