and he worshipped idols—Abū Khuzaʿah ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir—and I saw him dragging his entrails through the Fire.” Aḥmad alone (1) transmitted this through that chain.
This would imply that ʿAmr b. Luḥay is the very “Abū Khuzaʿah” after whom the entire tribe is named, as some genealogists—reported by Ibn Isḥāq and others—have maintained. Were we to rely on this report alone the point would seem conclusive, even explicit; however, other evidence contradicts it.
Al-Bukhārī said:
(2) Abū al-Yamān narrated to us; Shuʿayb informed us, from al-Zuhrī, who said:
“I heard Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab say: ‘The baḥīrah is a she-camel whose milk is withheld for the idols, so no one may milk her; and the sāʾibah is a she-camel they would set free for their gods, so nothing was ever loaded on her.’ He added, ‘Abū Hurayrah said that the Prophet ﷺ declared: “I saw ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir b. Luḥay al-Khuzaʿī dragging his entrails in the Fire; he was the first to set free the sāʾibah.”’ ” (3)(4)
Al-Bukhārī (5) recorded the report elsewhere, and Muslim (6) likewise transmitted it through Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān, from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd, from Abū Hurayrah.
Al-Bukhārī then said, “Ibn al-Hād also reported it from al-Zuhrī.”
Al-Ḥākim remarked that what he meant (7) was: “Ibn al-Hād narrated it from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. Bukht, from al-Zuhrī”—so he stated.
Aḥmad likewise transmitted it through Manṣūr (8) b. Salamah al-Khuzaʿī—from al-Layth b. Saʿd, from Yazīd b. al-Hād, from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd, from Abū Hurayrah: “I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘I saw ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir dragging his entrails in the Fire; he was the first to set free the sāʾibah and to institute the baḥīrah.’” He did not mention ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. Bukht between the narrators, as al-Ḥākim claimed. God knows best.
Aḥmad also (10) said: ʿAbd al-Razzaq told us; Maʿmar told us, from al-Zuhrī, from Abū Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of God ﷺ declared: “I saw ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir al-Khuzaʿī dragging his entrails in the Fire; he was the first to set free the sāʾibah.”
