Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

– About him clustered the warrior-kings of Kindah—battle-hardened champions, hawks in the fray.

– They left him behind and scattered in panic, every one of them with a shattered shin-bone.

– On the Day of Resurrection every creed will be worthless in God’s sight, save the ḥanīf faith.

Abū Qays ibn al-Aslat also said:

– Rise, then, pray to your Lord, and seek blessing by the corners of this House set between the rugged hills.

– You already received from it a confirmed sign on the morning when Abū Yaksūm, leader of the battalions, advanced.

– His main column marched across the plain, while his infantry—slingers—took up positions on the ridge-tops.

– Then, when the help of the Lord of the Throne arrived, the Sovereign’s hosts drove them back in sweeping dust and pelting stones.

– They fled headlong, and not an Abyssinian returned to his people save a few scattered bands.

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Qays al-Ruqayyāt, extolling the House’s majesty and its protection through the destruction of anyone who would violate it, said:

– The slit-nosed man who came with the elephant schemed against it, yet he turned away and his army was put to rout.

– The birds began pelting them with hard stones until they seemed the very target of a stoning.

– Whoever among humankind attacks it comes back disgraced, his troops in tatters.

Ibn Isḥāq and others relate: When Abrahah died, the kingship of the Abyssinians passed to his son Yaksūm, and after him to his brother.
