Al-Suhaylī (1) states that the two were born on the same day, and that day coincided with the death of Ṭarīfah bint al-Khayr the Himyarite. It is further said that she spat into the mouth of each of them, and so they inherited the gift of divination from her. She was the wife of ʿAmr ibn ʿĀmir mentioned earlier—and Allah knows best.
Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq (3) reports: Rabiʿah ibn Naṣr ruled Yemen among the ranks of the Tubbāʿ kings. He once saw a terrifying vision (4) that filled him with dread (5). Accordingly, he summoned every soothsayer, sorcerer, augur, and astrologer in his realm, and said to them: “I have seen a dream that has alarmed and frightened me; tell me what it was and what it signifies.”
They replied, “Relate it to us and we shall interpret it for you.”
He said, “If I tell you the dream, I will not be assured of your interpretation, for none can interpret it save the one who knows it before I disclose it.”
One of them suggested, “If the king desires this, let him send for Shiqq and Saṭīḥ, for no one is more knowledgeable than they; they will inform him of what he seeks.” So the king sent for them, and Saṭīḥ arrived before Shiqq.
The king said to him, “I have seen a dream that has terrified me; tell me what it was, for if you describe it correctly you will have mastered its interpretation.”
Saṭīḥ replied, “Very well. You saw a burning coal emerging from darkness (7); it fell upon the land of Tihāmah and devoured every creature possessed of a skull.”
The king said, “You have not missed a single detail, O Saṭīḥ. What, then, is your interpretation?”
He answered, “I swear by the serpent that lies between the two lava fields: the Abyssinians shall descend upon your land and shall rule everything from Abyan to Jurash.”
The king exclaimed, “O (8) Saṭīḥ, this is painful and grievous for us. When will it take place—during my lifetime or afterward?”
Saṭīḥ said, “No (9), but after a while—more than sixty or seventy (10) years will pass.”
The king asked, “Will their dominion endure (11) or will it be cut short?”
Saṭīḥ replied, “It will indeed be cut short after some seventy-odd years; then they will be killed and driven out in flight.”
The king said, “Who will undertake their slaughter and expulsion?”
Saṭīḥ answered, “It will be carried out (12) by Iram Dhū Yazan; he will march against them from Aden and will leave none of them in Yemen (13).”
The king asked, “Will his sovereignty endure, or—”
