It was mentioned earlier that from this ummah seventy thousand will enter Paradise without any reckoning (1). In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim the wording is: “With every thousand there will be seventy-thousand more” (2). In the version reported by Aḥmad: “With every single one of them there will be seventy-thousand” (3). What follows is a brief citation of the ḥadith’s main portions and a hint to its various chains and wordings.
In the two Ṣaḥīḥs, through the narration of Ḥuṣayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The nations were displayed before me. I saw a prophet accompanied by one man, a prophet accompanied by two men, and a prophet with no followers at all. Then a vast throng was raised up before me, and I supposed that they were my community. I was told, ‘This is Moses and his people; rather, look to the other horizon.’ I looked, and behold, an immense multitude. It was said to me, ‘This is your community, and with them are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning and without punishment.’” In that narration it is also said: “They are those who do not cauterize themselves, do not seek ruqyā (incantations), do not draw omens, and who place their trust in their Lord.” At that point ʿUkkāshah ibn Miḥṣan stood up. This ḥadith and others concerning the same matter have already been cited (4).
Hishām ibn ʿAmmār, the preacher of Damascus, and Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah—this being his wording—related: Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ziyād al-Alhānī informed me; I heard Abū Umāmah say, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declare:
“My Lord has promised me that He will admit into Paradise from my community seventy thousand, and with every thousand another seventy thousand, upon whom there will be no reckoning and no punishment, and in addition three handfuls scooped by my Lord—exalted is He.”
The same report was transmitted by Abū Bakr ibn Abī ʿĀṣim from Duḥaym, from al-Walīd ibn Muslim, from Ṣafwān ibn ʿAmr, from Sulaym ibn ʿĀmir, and by Abū al-Yamān (5) ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Luḥayy al-Hawzanī, from Abū Umāmah, with identical wording (6).
[Al-Ṭabarānī also narrated it through ʿĀmir ibn Zayd al-Bikālī, from ʿUtbah ibn ʿAbd al-Sullamī, from the Prophet ﷺ, in similar terms (7); and he transmitted it as well through Abū Asmāʾ al-Raḥabī, from Thawbān, with the same wording but without mentioning “three handfuls” (8). He further related it through Qays al-Kindī, from Abū Saʿīd al-Anmārī, in the same terms and including the mention of three handfuls (9).]
The remainder of its chains and wordings have been presented earlier. Allah, most glorious, knows best.
