Muslim likewise recorded it through the narration of Abu Hani’ Humayd ibn Hani’, with that same chain. (1)
Ahmad said: Husayn—namely, ibn Muhammad—narrated to us; Dawud—namely, ibn Nafi’ (2)—narrated to us; from Salm ibn Bashir (3); from Ikrimah; from Ibn Abbas, who said:
[The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said]:
“Two believers met at the gate of Paradise, one of them wealthy and the other poor, as they had been in the world. The poor believer was admitted to Paradise, whereas the rich one was detained for as long as Allah willed. Thereafter the rich man was admitted. The poor man met him and said, ‘My brother, what delayed you? By Allah, you were held back so long that I became afraid for you.’ He replied, ‘My brother, after you I was confined in a dreadful, repulsive place. So much sweat poured from me that, had a thousand camels—all of them having eaten ḥamḍ (a bitter desert shrub)—come to drink it, they would have gone away fully quenched.’” (4)
It is authentically established in the two Ṣaḥīḥs, in the narration of Abu ‘Uthman al-Nahdi from Usamah ibn Zayd, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“I stood at the gate of Paradise and found that the majority of those who entered it were the destitute; and I stood at the gate of Hell and saw that the majority of those who entered it were women.” (5)
A similar report appears in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī through the chain of Salm (6) ibn Zarir, from Abu Raja’, from ‘Imran ibn Husayn. ‘Abd al-Razzaq also transmitted it, from Ma‘mar, from Qatadah, from Abu Raja’—‘Imran ibn Milhan—from ‘Imran ibn Husayn, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“I looked into Paradise and saw that most of its inhabitants are the poor, and I looked into Hell and saw that most of its inhabitants are women.” (7)
Muslim narrated—from Shayban ibn Farrukh, from Abu al-Ashhab, from Abu Raja’, from Ibn Abbas—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked into Hell and saw that most of its people were women, and he looked into Paradise and saw that most of its people were the poor. (8)
Ahmad also said [‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Sharik narrated to us; from Abu Ishaq; from al-Sa’ib ibn Malik], from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I looked into Paradise and saw that most …”
