His right eye is sightless, protruding and in full view, as if it were a clot of phlegm stuck to a white-washed wall, while his left eye gleams like a brilliant star. He will command every language. With him will be a representation of Paradise—verdant, with water flowing through it—and a representation of Hell—jet-black and billowing smoke. (1)
This ḥadīth is gharīb (uncommon).
A similar report comes from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bazzār said: “ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Sajīd narrated to us; Mujālid narrated to us, from al-Shaʿbī, from Jābir, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘I am the seal of a thousand—or more—prophets, and not one of them failed to warn his people about the Dajjāl. Yet concerning him I have been shown what none of them was shown: he is one-eyed, whereas your Lord is not one-eyed.’ ” (2)
This chain of transmission is ḥasan (sound). The figure mentioned refers to the number of prophets who warned their peoples about the Dajjāl; yet another narration states, “There has never been a prophet who did not warn his community about the Dajjāl.” Allah knows best.
Al-Bukhārī said: “Muḥammad ibn Bashʿār related to us; Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar related to us; Shuʿbah related to us, from Furāt, who said: I heard Abū Ḥāzim say, ‘I kept the company of Abū Hurayrah for five years and heard him report from the Prophet ﷺ: “The Children of Israel were governed by the prophets; whenever a prophet died, another succeeded him. There will be no prophet after me; instead there will be caliphs—and they will be many.” They asked, “What do you command us to do, Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “Discharge your pledge to the first of them, one after another, and give them their rights; for Allah will call them to account for the trust He placed with them.” ’ ” (4)
Muslim likewise transmitted it from Bundār, and through another chain from Furāt, in similar wording. (5)
Al-Bukhārī also said: “ʿUmar ibn Ḥafṣ narrated to us; my father narrated to me; al-Aʿmash narrated to me; Shaqīq narrated to me that ʿAbd Allāh—meaning Ibn Masʿūd—said: ‘It is as though I am looking at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ depicting a prophet whom his people struck until he bled, and he was wiping the blood from his face while saying, “O Allah, forgive my people, for they do not know.” ’ ” (6)
Muslim’s transmitters (7) also relate it from al-Aʿmash with similar wording. (8)
